Anniversary of 1938 L.I. Express
Today is the anniversary of the New England Hurricane of 1938, also known as the Long Island Express. I talked at length about this storm when we issued our warning that it could happen again soon, so I won't rehash all that here. I will just add a graphic and animation that our graphic artists here at AccuWeather have created:
For the search-engine-impaired, the graphic provides these stats (not sure of sources but you can get more stats from Wikipedia):
- Over 600 Deaths in New England
- 63,000 Homeless
- $306 Million in Damage
- 2 Billion Trees Knocked Down
- 8,900 Buildings Destroyed
- 3,300 Boats Lost
- 121-MPH Winds, 186-MPH Gusts
- Storm Raced North at 58 MPH
- 50 Foot Waves at Gloucester
- Storm Surge 15 To 20 Feet
