Days 3-5: Finally today (Sunday), the storm outlook is looking up. Earlier today, Shawn and his team successfully launched a weather balloon from Omaha, Nebraska in support of VORTEX2 operations. As of this writing, they are still in the Omaha area, which is under a "Slight Risk" of severe storms today (that area will shift south on Monday). Track their location on the radar map and read their Twitter updates throughout the evening tonight.
On Friday, they had launched another balloon from Pioneer Park, Lincoln, NE. Later that day, they intercepted a thunderstorm in Custer County, NE that was not officially severe but had dime-sized hail and nice lightning (see videos at right).
But during their down time they toured the National Weather Center (see video at right) and interviewed the famous Sean Casey from Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers! Here he explains how the "armor" on his TIV2 (Tornado Intercept Vehicle) works, and how he plans to stay safe while inside a tornado.
