AccuChase `09 in Tornado Alley w/ VORTEX2
UPDATE: Since I've been flamed below and on this forum, allow me to clarify what I said below. What I meant was that I tried to bring the news of NOAA's "VORTEX2" project to light before cable media outlets made it a household name. I'm fully aware that NOAA themselves and many meteorologists were aware of VORTEX2.
About a month ago (when nobody had heard of it yet) I blogged about the government's VORTEX2 storm chasing project. Now the media is abuzz with interest and I'm happy to announce that an AccuWeather meteorologist will be joining the chase starting this weekend.
Between May 23rd and June 5th 2009, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Shawn Smith will be storm chasing in the Plains with the Oswego University Storm Forecasting and Observation Program, to assist the NOAA VORTEX2 project with Oswego's mobile radiosonde unit. Shawn will be posting photos and videos here, as well as keeping us updated via his Twitter account, from which you can see his latest updates below. I'll also be posting his photos and videos here, and on the AccuWeather.com Photo Gallery and Video PlayerBelow is a video that Shawn did with Evan Myers yesterday:
To make sure you keep up with the latest info from AccuChaser Shawn, monitor my "ACCU CHASE '09" blog category (at right). which will include all future entries about Shawn's chase.
Now, due to Murphy's law, the weather in the Plains has gotten so boring that VORTEX2 has grounded their media vehicle, but Shawn even has fun in cold temperatures so I'm sure he'll have fun and hopefully the storms will be back next week.
