A Mammoth 100+ Inches of Snow
UPDATE: AccuWeather meteorologists report that the 95" total has increased to 109 inches of snow from this storm.
Mammoth Mountain reports today that 95 inches of snow (nearly 8 feet!) have fallen during the storm which lasted for the last 30 hours. Some photos that they took are shown on this page with their permission.
To quote from their site:
Wow! Wow! Wow! 95 inches - nearly 8 feet in 30 hours........does that even happen? Well, it happens in Mammoth! We now have the best base depth in the U.S. with 10-12 feet of lots of fresh powder and some packed-powder and machine-groomed snow.
I second those three "Wow's". Incredible.
Mammoth is located in Central California on the Eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. So far this season they have accumulated 247 inches (20.58 feet) of snow.
According to Chris Burt, author of Extreme Weather, the official record snowfall for a 24-hour period was 75.8" in Silver Lake, Colorado in April 1927. That same storm produced 95" of snow in 32.5 hours, slightly more time than this "Mammoth" storm. Unofficially, his book says that 84" fell in 24 hours in Crestview, California in 1952.
