A Circumscribed Halo and Parhelic Circle
Are you friends with me on Facebook, following @WeatherMatrix on Twitter, or reading "J's Breaking Weather News" at the bottom of these blogs? If not, you're missing a lot of great weather tidbits that I don't have time to blog about.
I am kind of interested in atmospheric optics, so I took note of this halo photo uploaded to our Photo Gallery last weekend, which showed some things I had never seen before:
It shows a common "22-degree circular halo" but also a rarely-photographed "circumscribed halo" (the larger, oval halo surrounding the main one) and "parhelic circle" (the third halo intersecting at right) with a sundog.
UPDATE: Check out Hunter's pictures of this phenomemnon also. (Hunter is the "Delaware waterspout guy)."
