UPDATE 6/28:
Low temperatures this morning fell into the 30s in seven states! A list of the lowest readings that I could find for each state shown, most of which are from amateur stations, is shown below (click to enlarge map).
Many stations tied their record daily lows, but officially only Tri-Cities (Bristol), Tennessee and Baltimore, Maryland broke records.
-
Tazewell, VA: 35
-
Mt. Wash, NH: 36 (NWS)
-
Bittinger, MD: 36
-
Canaan, WV: 37
-
Clarion, PA: 37
-
Mt. Leconte, TN: 37 (COOP)
-
Roan Mountain, NC: 38
Here in Pennsylvania, I was 43 degrees at my house in State College -- quite unusual. You can see other lows on the Centre County Mesonet blog.
ORIGINAL BLOG 6/26:
It's going to be downright chilly Wednesday morning in the East -- 30s F in the mountains with 40s in the foothills! This map shows the NAM3 model's guess on low temperatures:
How unusual is this? Let's take a look at two cities on the map.
- Johnstown, Pennsylvania's daily record for June 28 is 46 F, set in 1897. A high of 46 is also NORMAL on September 28. They should be in the mid- to upper 40s come Wednesday morning, according to AccuWeather.com.
- Charlottesville, Virginia is forecast to be 53, matching their daily record -- which is normally observed on October 4!
Of course, one or two cold nights is no indicator of how the summer has been so far, or how it will go. It's a drop in the bucket compared to the Summer Polar Vortex of 2014, or the Year Without a Summer in 2009.
