70 MPH Winds Possible in Appalachians
High wind warnings and advisories are in effect for the Appalachian mountains and high land of Pennsylvania tonight and tomorrow (clipped map below, click to LIVE U.S. ADVISORIES (PREMIUM | PRO) to get a live map and the key).
Some of the advisories for the Virginia mountains quote wind gusts to 60 mph, while one advisory for the North Carolina mountains says quote "GUSTS OF 60 TO 70 MPH WILL BE COMMON." In Pennsylvania, the advisories didn't mention anything above 45 mph, which we get here pretty often this time of year. The NWS believes the highest wind gusts (shown below) will be early Wednesday afternoon.
The places to watch for high wind gusts in the North Carolina mountains (where I used to live) will be at Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell. I'll let you know what gusts they get tomorrow.
