-55 RealFeel, 2 Feet of Snow, Strange NJ Cloud
With a temperature of -17 and a wind speed of 29 mph (sustained!) Dickinson, North Dakota won the award for "coldest location in the nation" this morning with a RealFeel temperature off -56 degrees at 9 AM local time (their wind chill of -49, or -70 if you use the "old" wind chill calculation!). At one point this morning, there were 5 official recording stations in North Dakota below -50 degrees.
In other news, this photo out of New Jersey caught my eye:
cb261 captions the photo: "Overcast sky from morning sleet storm transitions abruptly to clear sky a little after 2 p.m. on Dec. 21 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, USA.
Excellent pic. If I'm not mistaken, a panorama or wide-angel lens. I checked the visible satellite from that time, and sure enough, you could see it from far above the earth as well! The cloud was a high-level cirrus deck that was rapidly being evaporated by cold air moving in from the Northeast (I guess - what do I know? I'm not a satellite geek).
