45 Below: Plains, Midwest Near All-Time Records
UPDATE:My Buddy Scott's Blog [JessePedia] also has an entry on this morning's cold temperatures as observed via satellite.
We may not know for sure until the official data comes out tomorrow, but temperatures this morning in the Plains and Midwest are near all-time records. Here's a look at the current (9 AM Eastern) temperatures:
And here's a map of all-time record low temperatures from NCDC's Climate Atlas:
At first glance, it looks like a couple locations could break their all-time records. But when you look at the state extreme minimum temperatures from NCDC, it gets less likely that we'll see any state-wide records broken.
ILLINOIS: Mount Carroll, Illinois was -31 this morning (although that's an amateur station that couldn't count for official records). Officially it was -37 at Rochelle but I am suspicious of this reading due to temperatures at nearby stations being much higher. The closest runner ups were -24 at KARR & KSQI.
NORTH DAKOTA: The coldest reading I could find was -45 at Charlie, officially -41 at KN60, not at all near their all-time record.
