36 Foot Waves: Wilma Thrashes Gulf
Hurricane Wilma continues to thrash Cozumel Island and the Yucatan coast this evening. The latest radar image from the Mexican government shows extreme rainfall, off the scale where the top represents 5 inches per hour. That was from 19:37 Z, after which time the radar stopped responding.

Buoy 42056 showed wind gusts to 92 mph during its closest pass to the storm, along with 36-foot waves. Incredibly, Buoy 42003 (stationed in the east-central Gulf of Mexico) measured waves nearly 14-foot waves -- nearly 400 miles from the center of the hurricane!
