25 Days Off School, Models: Superstorm Impact
We did an interesting video yesterday talking about Grayson County, Virginia where students finally went back to school yesterday after 25 days off due to snow, cold and wind. This is the same thing my mom (driveway cam) has been saying about North Carolina, and what we've heard from our Facebook Fans regarding Tennessee.
The entire southern Appalachians have been plagued with snow, cold and wind this season. In my experience, only the highest elevations there usually have snow cover for more than a week during the winter, but some have had it since December due to unusually cold temperatures. Many of our Facebook Fans reported that their children had seen a week or more off this season, with some as high as 4 weeks!
The impacts from the next storm are being covered well in our news stories on AccuWeather.com. The forecast models are being fairly consistent with this and I'll show you a couple impressive images from them below.
You can look at our snow map and see that this is not another huge storm for Philadelphia and New York city, though they are on the edge of it and things could change.
This is more of a story for New York State, Pennsylvania, and interior New England but I can't stress enough that this will be a long-duration storm in interior New England and it will be windy with blowing and drifting snow all the way into Pennsylvania and the mountains of Maryland and West Virginia. Coastal areas will see flooding and high waves. This storm will not be the run-of-the-mill blizzard that we've almost gotten used to this season and I predict you'll see plenty of impressive video footage on the cable news channels starting tomorrow afternoon.
