100-Year Flood: NY Rivers Top Records
Some of the river stages in New York and Pennsylvania are just incredible this afternoon. I wrote a little earlier about Pennsylvania rivers, but the flooding in New York is also very impressive. Consider the Susquehanna River at Conklin (live | archived):
The current stage: 23.5 feet; more than double the flood stage of 11! This surpasses the previous record of 20.8 feet set in 1948. According to the National Weather Service, at that time "100 CELLARS AND 83 FIRST FLOORS OF HOMES FLOODED" and at 22.0 feet (which we are now above), we'll be looking at "LEVEES OVERTOPPED AT BINGHAMTON WATER WORKS."
The Susquehanna River at Bainbridge (live | archived) is not doing much better:
The current stage: 21.9 feet; flood stage was 13 feet. It is forecast to crest at 24.6 feet. This will surpass the previous record of 23.1 feet set in 1914. At 22 feet, the NWS says "SEVERE FLOODING BEGINS. WILLOW STREET EXTENSION SECTION IN SIDNEY BECOMES INUNDATED WITH SEVERAL FEET OF WATER... 2 TO 3 FEET OF WATER ON WILLOW STREEET... 1 FOOT OF WATER ON FIRST FLOOR OF SEVERAL HOMES. FLOODING BEGINS ON WALNUT ST...R IVER ST AND OAK AVE IN BAINBRIDGE."
