My Spring Forecast

By Staff

Published Mar 12, 2012 8:44 AM EST | Updated Mar 13, 2012 3:21 AM EST

This is my weather outlook for spring across Canada....

In making this forecast, I took into account some of the following....

1. Steady weakening of La Nina. 2. Cooler-than-normal water temperatures off the West Coast. 3. Warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures south of Atlantic Canada. 4. Lack of sea ice this winter over the Great Lakes. 5. Lack of snowcover over the southern Prairies this past winter. 6. Other analog years. 7. Long-range computer modeling. 8. Current and forecast atmospheric oscillations.

Overall, it looks like much of western Canada, especially the Yukon Territory, will remain colder than normal this spring, while much of the Prairies and Atlantic Canada will experience a warmer spring compared to normal.

An active storm track will lead to above-normal rain and mountain snow over western Canada and into the northern Prairies.

Prevailing southwesterly winds will result in a mild spring over southern Ontario. Lake surface temperatures are also running warmer as there was little in the way of ice to melt.

A secondary storm track should bring wetter conditions from central Ontario through Labrador, though it will not be that cold.
