Storm with snow, ice and rain sweeping through the Northeast to end the week

A narrow band of winter weather hazards will stretch from Michigan to Maine into Friday night, with a soaking rain for the I-95 corridor.

AccuWeather CNN Correspondent Michael Yoshida reports from the Reagan International Airport in Arlington, Virginia, where a ground stop was issued on Jan. 31, in response to the deadly plane crash.

A large storm is finishing its cross-country trek, delivering rain, snow and ice to the Midwest and Northeast into Friday night.

Winter driving hazards will be limited to a narrow corridor from Michigan to Maine as cold air retreats during the storm and milder air takes its place.

"This storm is bringing a large area of precipitation to the Northeast, mainly as rain in most places," AccuWeather Meteorologist Nick Arman said.

As precipitation moved in during the early morning hours of Friday and temperatures hovered around freezing, there were some pockets of freezing rain and drizzle that created slick spots across the central Appalachians and into southeastern New England.

Milder weather along the I-95 corridor has resulted in rain rather than ice, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s from Washington, D.C., to Boston. Travelers may still encounter slower travel, including on the roads and at the airports. Dense fog will reduce visibility at times into the evening hours.

Farther north, cold air will linger longer and result in all or mostly snow for the duration of the event.

"A thin band of snow will develop on the northern edge of the storm, with the potential for 1-3 inches and even 3-6 inches of accumulating snow, especially in higher elevations of New England," Arman said. The AccuWeather Local StormMax™ is 12 inches.

The storm will swiftly move off the coast by the weekend, leaving behind cold and blustery, yet dry and sunny weather on Saturday.

Behind this storm, another wave of snow is forecast to sweep from Minnesota to New England from late Saturday into Sunday.

"Some of the same areas in New York and New England experiencing snow late Friday and Friday night can expect another dose of snow late Sunday into Sunday night," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Courtney Travis. Residents should be prepared for more slippery travel for the second half of the weekend, and perhaps lingering into the Monday morning commute.
