Wet weather to usher in cooling relief for western, central Europe

Published Jun 23, 2020 1:57 PM EDT

Copied

A beach in Bournemouth, England, was packed on June 25, despite COVID-19, as a heat wave brought warm conditions to the area.

Many places across western and northern Europe have experienced a stretch of very warm and dry weather in recent days following wet weather last week.

The prolonged period of warm and dry weather lasted through Wednesday across the majority of the region.

London hit 32 C (90 F) on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. After reaching 32 C (90 F) on Wednesday, Paris climbed to 34 C (93 C) on Thursday, along with other cities like Lyon and Toulouse in France.

“High pressure that has been providing the warm and dry conditions started breaking down on Thursday, allowing for more showers to return to places like Ireland, Germany and northern Spain," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Travis.

The additional cloud cover associated with the wet weather will prevent some communities from getting as warm into the weekend.

"We will see a change in the pattern into the weekend as a large area of low pressure pushes eastward from the Atlantic," AccuWeather Meteorologist Isaac Longley said.

Conditions were still warmer than normal in many areas to end the week, but temperatures continued to lower throughout the weekend as air from the Atlantic spread across the area.

"The storm near Ireland will spread showers and thunderstorms from the United Kingdom, France and northern Spain first, then spread eastward throughout the weekend as far east as western Poland," Longley added

As these storms push into the warm air in place across western France, they could become strong with hail and locally damaging wind gusts.

While locally gusty thunderstorms are possible across Britain, Germany and eastern France into the weekend, widespread severe weather is not expected to unfold.

In addition to the bouts of rain and storms, a strong wind blew across Ireland and the U.K. over the weekend.

Longley expected wind gusts to reach 65 km/h (40 mph) in some places. This could cause a few tree branches to break and outdoor furniture to blow around.
