Thunderstorms through Wednesday to bring likelihood of more delays as Little League World Series continues

Grounds crew members raced out on Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, home of the State College Spikes, to cover the field with a tarp to protect it from a storm in State College, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 14.

Without much of a change in the pattern, more storms are likely for the Little League World Series through Wednesday.

The first day of games last Thursday started off the series on a very soggy note. Rounds of afternoon and evening thunderstorms ended up postponing three of the four scheduled games through Friday of last week.

Lightning in the region brought further delays on Saturday. The game between Italy and Canada was delayed approximately two hours while thunderstorms rolled through the region in the early evening.

Sunday afternoon, the Little League World Series game between the West and Mid-Atlantic was suspended, according to a tweet, as a thunderstorm hit the area. That game resumed on Monday.

The chance for wet weather will return at midweek. Quick-moving storm systems will continue to move from the center of the country into the Northeast, bringing more showers and thunderstorms.

Highs on Wednesday are forecast to be in the 80s and accompanied by high humidity.

"Some of the games are likely to be delayed or suspended through midweek," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

"Storms may be locally severe with the risk of frequent lightning strikes, strong wind gusts and torrential downpours," Sosnowski said.

Much cooler and less humid air will sweep in later this week and last through this weekend for the final games.

"While there is the risk of a shower on Thursday, the weather from Friday through Sunday looks to be free of rain and more typical of the middle of September," Sosnowski said.

"Those traveling to the venue on Sunday morning may encounter some river valley fog, but the weather will be fine for baseball during the afternoon."

The Little League World Series will continue all the way through Sunday, August, 25, as eight international and eight U.S. regional teams battle it out to see who will be the champion.
