St. Nicholas Day forecast: Frigid morning to cause many to shiver in Germany
Arctic air settling over Germany may prompt children to leave their shoes for St. Nicholas indoors instead of outside before going to bed on Monday night.
Children in the Roman Catholic areas of Germany are eagerly awaiting the morning of Tuesday’s St. Nicholas Day to find out what gifts or treats the cherished bearded saint has left them.
However, teeth-chattering will accompany shrills of excitement for any child who has to reach outdoors to grab their shoes on Tuesday morning.
Anyone participating in Krampus runs the evening before St. Nicholas Day will also be forced to bundle up or add extra layers underneath costumes.

Even those who do not observe St. Nicholas Day will face the frigid conditions to start Tuesday.
Early morning lows will be held 3-5 degrees Celsius (5-10 degrees Fahrenheit) below normal in most communities with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein being the exceptions.
Bavaria will join Thuringia and Saxony as the coldest states with temperatures of 8 to 4 below zero C (18 to 25 F) starting the day.
Temperatures will then rise close to normal in the afternoon.
While hats, mittens and scarves should still be worn, Tuesday afternoon will not be bad by early December standards for those heading out to St. Nicholas Day festivities in Munich.
“High pressure will be in place across southern Germany on Tuesday, allowing for a seasonably chilly early December day,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards said.
“Any wind will be light and sunshine should be plentiful.”
Temperatures will climb from the chilly early morning low of around 6 below zero C (22 F) to near 3 C (37 F) by the time St. Nicholas will be distributing gifts at 12:00 at the Chinese Tower’s Christmas Market.
After Munich records a high of near 6 C (42 F), temperatures will gradually fall from 4 C (40 F) to near freezing as St. Nicholas rides the Christkindl Tram from 15:30 to 19:00.
In the wake of St. Nicholas festivities, fresh chilly air will plunge into Munich and all of eastern Germany at midweek as dry weather holds.
A turn to milder, yet stormier weather will follow later next week and into the following weekend.
