Photographer Jeff Miles was taking photographs of the night sky in Western Australia on Tuesday when he witnessed a bright purple lightning bolt.
“This was a mind blowing experience to see with my eyes, never mind researching the photos to find out just how rare they are,” Miles wrote on his Facebook page.
The phenomenon, known as ionospheric lightning, occurs in the upper atmosphere, according to meteorologist Joe Pollina of the National Weather Service. That makes it very rare to see, and the fact that Miles saw six of them that night all the more special.
“Gigantic jets have only been captured on camera a handful of times, and this night I was lucky enough to see six jets,” Miles wrote.
