Grab your umbrellas in the northeastern US -- but this time for sun, not rain

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published Jun 6, 2019 2:19 PM EST | Updated Sep 4, 2019 2:55 PM EST

Portions of the northeastern United States have had trouble bunching a couple of dry days together this year, but that's all changing into this weekend.

An atmospheric road block has set up for a few days as the pattern slows down the routine west-to-east motion of storms across the Northeast. Storms will have to detour around the region rather than move through it.

However, instead of the region getting stuck in a rainy pattern, most areas are in for a two- to- four-day stretch of dry weather and at least partial sunshine.

"Most areas from central and northern Ohio to northern West Virginia and northern Virginia to northern Maine can expect rain-free weather with low humidity through Saturday," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek.

Saturday NE

"Much of New England is likely to have the longest break of dry weather, likely lasting into part of Monday," Dombek said.

High and mid-level clouds that dimmed and blocked the sun from Pennsylvania to New Jersey, southern New York state and southern New England on Friday may linger on Saturday.

Dry weather and warm sunshine will make for fast track conditions at the 151st Annual Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York, during Saturday evening.

The stretch of dry weather will allow outdoor construction and maintenance projects to pick up speed.

If you have been waiting for a stretch of dry weather to do painting or top coat your driveway, now's the time.

Golfers and beachgoers should not have to worry about getting wet. Those who have outdoor graduations or weddings can rest easy.

Anyone who plans on spending an extended period of time outdoors should remember to use sunscreen. The sun is intense during June even if it is masked by high clouds.

Beach Umbrella

Those heading to the beach should be aware that waters are often still chilly during early June. Atlantic surf temperatures range from the lower 50s along the eastern New England coast to the upper 60s along the Virginia capes.

Beachgoers will also need to be wary of the potential for rough surf along the mid-Atlantic coast this weekend.

"The last time both days of the weekend were dry in New York City was two months ago on April 6 and 7," Dombek said.

Every batch of dry weather has its boundaries, however.

Areas from southern Ohio to central and southern West Virginia and Virginia can expect unsettled conditions with episodes of rain right through this weekend.

Downpours South

As the atmospheric traffic jam breaks up on Sunday, clouds and rain will begin to advance northeastward, albeit slowly.

By Monday, wet weather and higher humidity levels will have returned to much of the mid-Atlantic and eastern Great Lakes.

Monday Rain Flooding 9 am

Unsettled conditions are then likely to overspread New England during Monday night and Tuesday.
