Five winter weather hazards that you need to be aware of

All seasons accompany their own safety guidelines, but winter hazards seem especially worrisome. Between inclement winter weather, outdoor hazards, fires related to the time of year and hazards on the road, it is smart to practice caution during this time of year. Being aware of these problems so that you can be prepared is key to staying protected. Without having to worry about the dangers of the season, it can be a truly enjoyable time period. Not to mention, you’ll have more worry-free time to happily (and safely) frolic in the snow instead.
Winter Storm Hazards
Winter storms and weather can be particularly risky when in some regions, temperatures can drop to below zero. Storms and hazards like extreme cold or heavy snow and ice can be dangerous and even life threatening. Officials advise us to stay ahead of the storm and know how to act accordingly, to have preparations and supplies, to stay warm, and to stay indoors in a safe place when a winter storm strikes.
Outdoor Winter Hazards
Being outdoors can be refreshing this time of year, but in places that experience a cold winter, it can also be unsafe at times. Thin ice, freezing temperatures, frostbite and hypothermia risk, and snow shoveling can prove perilous without the proper safeguards. Be sure to not to walk on ice or frozen ponds, especially ones that are not regulated for use like for safe ice skating. Also, keep kids indoors when it is extremely cold, keep warm and covered up when out in the elements, and also take it easy while shoveling. Take breaks and stay hydrated while you shovel snow.
Winter Fire Hazards
During the chilly winter months we tend to crank up our heaters and a lot of our activities are now limited to indoors. Check your heaters for functionality and safety; if you are unsure, call in a professional to have your heating system maintained. Winter is especially known for cooking accidents; practice caution in the kitchen and never leave the stove or oven unattended. Also, holiday and seasonal decor, while beautiful, can cause fires as well; you can check your existing decorations for faults or replace them with newer, safer versions. An example would be to replace old, hot incandescent lights with LEDs.
Indoor Winter Hazards
Besides fire, other specific indoor concerns happen to also be life-saving if handled properly. Many people do not consider carbon monoxide as the villain that it is. The odorless killer, carbon monoxide is exceptionally hazardous in the winter for those who would only be exposed to it from their heating. Winter and all year round, invest in working carbon monoxide detectors and call your local fire department for advice. Mold and mildew are also risks within the home due to forced air heat, excess humidity and improper ventilation. This is a perfect time of year to check your home for mold and even conduct testing for it.
