Occasionally, a mature thunderstorm undergoes a total collapse through its core, causing a massive downward rush of air. Upon reaching the ground, the downburst splashes out in all directions, producing winds up to 70 mph. Over the years, thunderstorm downbursts have been a great hazard to commercial airlines.
