Dale was born in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, on April 16, 1959. He first became interested in weather when he was a child and recalls cutting out weather maps and pasting them in a notebook when he was just 8 years old. The blizzard of 1966, the first Presidents' Day snowstorm in February 1972 and the cold, snowy winter of 1977-78 were all weather events that increased Dale's fascination with weather. In 1972, he began keeping daily observations, a practice that he has continued ever since.

In high school, Dale was both a scholar and an athlete. During his years at Twin Valley Senior High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society, a two-year letter winner in cross country and an outfielder on the all-county baseball team for Berks county in 1976.

After graduating from high school in 1977, Dale went on to attend the Pennsylvania State University. While in college, he developed and honed his forecasting skills as a member of the Campus Weather Service. He worked the early morning shift, posting maps and making forecasts for small-market radio stations around the state. To help finance his education, Dale performed various jobs, such as carpentry, lawn care and farm labor during the summer months.

In 1981, Dale graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in meteorology and, soon after that, began to work for AccuWeather, the world's largest commercial weather service. As an Associate Forecaster, he worked many different schedules and finally settled into the early morning shift in 1984, working in radio broadcasting and writing radio and television forecasts. Over the years, Dale rose through the ranks and is now an Expert Senior Forecaster. He also serves as Co-Director of AccuWeather's International Forecasting Department.

Married to Kelly, a full-time mother and kindergarten assistant since 1993, Dale has two children: Courtney, born August 1, 1986, and Derek, born April 23, 1989.

When he is not dedicating his time to AccuWeather, Dale enjoys playing softball on the company team and playing basketball in the winter months. Dale also is an overseer on the Mid-State Trail, Pennsylvania's version of the Appalachian Trail. Sunday mornings you will find Dale volunteering as a sound technician at the State College C & MA Church. Recently, Dale has joined with his son in starting a small lawn care business.
