Cool start to the World Series for games 1 and 2 in Boston this week

By Courtney Travis, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Cold air will settle over the Northeast this week, bringing a chilly start to the 2018 World Series.

The first game of the World Series will be played at Fenway Park in the heart of the city of Boston. The Red Sox will be the host for the Los Angeles Dodgers to start off the series on Tuesday evening.

Those attending the evening game, or even heading to the ballpark earlier in the day, will need to bundle up.

"The chilly air that moved into the Northeast on Sunday will stick around through much of the week, with temperatures as much as 4-8 degrees Fahrenheit below normal," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff.

Afternoon high temperatures in Boston are expected to be around 55 on Tuesday, a solid 5 degrees below normal for this time of year.

Below-normal temperatures will continue Tuesday, with the mercury expected to be around 50 for the first pitch. With the sun below the horizon and a light breeze, AccuWeather RealFeel&reg Temperatures will only be in the middle 40s.

Throughout the game, temperatures will slowly fall into the upper 40s.

Fans attending the game will want to dress in layers and even bring along gloves and warm hats.

The second game of the World Series on Wednesday evening will also be held at Fenway Park, before the Series takes a trip out west for games three, four and five.

Temperatures on Wednesday evening could be even lower than those expected on Tuesday.

After high temperatures in the lower 50s on Wednesday afternoon, the mercury will fall to around 45 for Wednesday's first pitch.

Additionally, Wednesday evening is expected to be breezier, which will cause AccuWeather RealFeel&reg Temperatures to dip into the 30s.

Static World Series Game 2

Once again, fans will want to bundle up, this time perhaps with a heavier jacket and some hand warmers.

"It may be a good thing, for the weather for the game, that the series heads back to Los Angeles late this week and this weekend," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

"A nor'easter is forecast to affect the Boston area from Saturday to Sunday," Sosnowski said.

The weather in Los Angeles is forecast to be warm and free of precipitation.

Should the series last into early next week, the storm will have departed New England, but spotty rain and snow showers may occur.

Despite the chill hanging over these first two games of the 2018 World Series, it is far from the coldest World Series ever.

Officially, the coldest World Series was back in 1997 during the fourth game of the match-up between the Florida Marlins and the Cleveland Indians. Played in Cleveland, temperatures were around 38 degrees at the first pitch with a wind chill around 18 degrees.

Records of temperatures at World Series games only began in the 1970s, so it is certainly possible that there were colder games prior to that time.
