Two people were rescued Wednesday after they became trapped on an ice floe in Michigan's Saginaw Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Bay County Sheriff's Office, Pinconning-Fraser Fire Department and Kawkawlin Fire Department responded to a call Wednesday reporting two people stranded on an ice floe about one mile off Almeda Beach, north of Bay City State Park.
An ice rescue team worked in windy, freezing temperatures to reach the stranded people and brought them safely back to shore. No injuries were reported. A helicopter crew from Air Station Detroit flew over the area to make sure no one else was stranded in the area. The rescue prompted a warning statement on the dangers of ice at this time of year.
"As temperatures drop and winter activities like ice fishing and snowmobiling draw people to frozen lakes and rivers, understanding the dangers of ice is critical to prevent accidents,” U.S. Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer James Hassinger, Officer-in-Charge Station Saginaw River said.
