Snow Closes Hawaii Slope

Carl beat me to this excellent article about heavy snow closing the Mauna Kea volcano and ski slope in Hawaii. At 14,000 feet of course, it's not uncommon for snow to fall at the top in winter, but even the park rangers called this amount "unusual". You can see the current webcam images here (I saved off these: 123).
So it can really snow in Hawaii? The Big Kahuna says:
