"There were 140 total tornadoes...3 EF4s, 12 EF3s, 20 EF2s, 77 EF1's, and 28 EF0s. By state... GA-30, AL-27, SC-25, NC-16, MS-15, LA-15, TX-6, TN-4, MD-2, FL-1. This state total adds up to 142 because 2 of the tornadoes crossed a state line. The combined total length of the tornado paths was 938.68 miles."

UPDATE 4/24/2020:

According to the Wikipedia list of tornadoes, 138 twisters have been confirmed.

Easter Tornado Outbreak Update... **140 TORNADOES**
That ranks it the #5 tornado outbreak since 2010. The 2011 outbreaks featured twice as many tornadoes in one day than we saw this year.

But, that depends on how you define "outbreak" -- the #1 outbreak since 2010 was the 12-day tornado outbreak of 2019, which featured less tornadoes in a 2-day period than this Easter's event.

From the Wikipedia page on April 24, 2020.

The Easter 2020 tornado outbreak (which took place in the middle of the nationwide coronavirus lockdown) will rank amongst the largest tornado outbreaks in history. With 132 tornadoes,* it takes its place amongst other outbreaks like 1974, 2004 and 2011. Three dozen people were killed.

*According to Wikipedia as read on April 18th, the 212 tornado reports shown above were whittled down to 132 tornadoes, because some were duplicate reports.

Dozens of tornadoes left damage paths throughout the southern U.S. Some were deadly in Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas where more than a dozen people died.

Surveyed tornado tracks and wind damage points (Maryland not included).

Of those, the largest tornadoes included:

  • The EF-4 Bassfield / Covington / Soso / Moss / Heidelberg / Pachuta, Mississippi tornado, which had a 67.77-mile path and was 2.25 miles wide -- a state, and nearly national, record.

  • The EF-3 Oak Vale / Carson / N. Collins / Stringer / Paulding, Mississippi tornado, which had an 84.1-mile path and was 1.16 miles wide.

  • An EF-3 tornado that travelled 20 miles near Chattanooga, Tennessee.

  • A group of EF-3 tornadoes in western South Carolina.

Damage from these twisters was extensive. These two GIFs are but a small part of that damage in Mississippi and Tennessee:

Before and after images from the EF4 tornado in Seminary, Miss., April 12.

Before and after images from the EF3 tornado near Chattanooga, Tenn., April 12.

At one time, Sunday, four "Particularly Dangerous Situation Tornado Emergencies" were in effect!

The tornadoes were spawned by an immense storm system that delivered high winds to nearly every state east of the Mississippi River the next day -- along with more tornadoes. Some highlights of the wind gusts include:

Top 5 wind gusts on April 13, 2020.

Wind gusts exceeded 70 mph in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

This list features locations with gusts over 71 mph:

  • Mount Washington, NH: 89 mph

  • Milton, MA: 87 mph

  • Whiteface Mountain, NY: 86 mph

  • Lanoka Harbor, NJ: 82 mph

  • Mystic Island, NJ: 81 mph

  • Chesapeake Bay: 81 mph

  • Moosic, PA: 80 mph

  • Indian Beach, DE: 79 mph

  • Mount Mansfield, VT: 79 mph

  • Dorton, KY: 79 mph

  • California, MD: 79 mph

  • Indian Beach, DE: 76 mph

  • Long Island Buoy: 76 mph

  • Annapolis, MD: 75 mph

  • Ghent, VA: 74 mph

  • Beach Haven, NJ: 74 mph

  • Atlantic City, NJ: 73 mph

  • Cape Henry, VA: 73 mph

  • Glen Burnie, MD: 72 mph

4.3 million customers - 1.44 million concurrently - lost power from the tornadoes and winds.

This also caused damage, especially on the New Jersey coast when coupled with high waves. This is what the frontal map looked like Monday... a 983 mb low with a warm front, cold front and an occluded front that expanded into another cold and warm front.

Below this map is every tweet that I did for this tornado outbreak. There may be additional information not contained above.
