Photo: Power Tower vs. T-Storm
Typhoon Prapiroon has killed over 40 people in China since Thursday night's landfall, according to Xinhuanet. The storm produced severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, in addition to torrential rains. The Chinese Meteorological Agency has some great photos, and puts the top wind speed at 33 m/s (mph) and points out that nearly half a million people and over 60,000 boats were evacuated prior to the storm.
Today's AP Photo of the Day is pretty impressive, and not something you see everyday:
Thunderstorm vs. Power Tower - Aug. 3, 2006 - A power pylon is seen after it collapsed in a lightning storm in Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province Thursday Aug. 3, 2006. The death toll from Tropical Storm Prapiroon rose to six in south China on Friday as the storm weakened further into a tropical depression but continued to drench an area where 400,000 people had been evacuated. The use of the term "pylon" is interesting -- here in the U.S., the words means "traffic cone" but in the U.K. it means transmission tower, according to M-W.com.
