NMM Plus WRF Equals Tropical Storm?
The government officially switched from using the NAM (North American Model) to the much-ballyhooed WRF (Weather Research & Forecasting) model version of the NMM (Non-hydrostatic Mesoscale Model) this morning.*
Meanwhile, an upper-level disturbance was throwing off thunderstorms over warm water off the coast of Florida.
Put two and two together, and what do you get?
The NMM is forecasting a tropical storm to begin swirling off the Southeast coast over the weekend.
*What does this switch to the WRF/NMM mean? Hopefully more accurate, higher resolution forecasts. This supercomputer model has been running for several years and the government believes it's ready for prime-time. Since it's the new model's first day, we hope it's not calling for the sky to fall!
