NASA Sat Shows Massive Burma Flooding

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

UPDATE: Before I close the book on the topic of Cyclone Nargis, here are some additional maps produced by AccuWeather.

Cyclone Nargis 2008
Cyclone Nargis 2008

P.S.: The use of the term "tidal wave" can be confusing - this was a storm surge, not a tsunami (wave produced by an earthquake).

AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) had an interesting diatribe on his blog today about how Al Gore is claiming that "storms like these" are being caused by Global Warming. He posted some recent sea-surface temperature anomaly images and other links.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

According to the UK's Times Online...

NASA has uploaded before and after satellite pictures (zooms shown below) clearly showing the massive parts of the continent submerged in flood waters after Nargis (and here we're not even talking of the storm surge, which would have receded by the time the sky cleared enough to take a satellite picture!) Given these images and knowing that most of the people living there were unable to leave, it's obvious why the death toll was so high.
