Madness: Radar for the Birds
Madness Man (or a Mad Reader) mentioned last week (PREMIUM | PRO) that the NWS said that you could see birds on the New York radars last Monday. With the help of Google, I've located the actual NWS statement, and with the help of WKTV's blog, I have secured the radar animation of the birds in question (near the NY/PA border).
Seeing birds on NEXRAD Radar is not unusual, in fact I've got some great animations on disk somewhere. One that I saved off, which is a little more impressive than the one from last week, has been discussed on the WeatherMatrix Forums. There is an example of a "ring" bird animation (my favorite!) on the Lexta NEXRAD Anomalies Site. There is at least one major Radar Ornithology website, and there's even a place that sells mini-radars specifically for bird observation.
