Last Storm Update, Next Storm Jitters, Ghog Day

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist

UPDATE 2/2: The Groundhog saw his shadow this morning (6 more weeks of winter) or so they say. In reality, they come up with the forecast ahead of time and it has little to do with the current conditions. In reality it's unlikely the Groundhog or anyone could see shadow this morning due to the cloudiness (see airport obs below or sat loop.

ORIGINAL BLOG: I have updated my blog entry from Sunday with the new map shown below, and a new list of snowfall amounts.

snow201zs

If you believe anything on the map above is inaccurate, leave me a Comment. Keep in mind though that this may not show localized amounts. UPDATE: I understand that the map did not do a good job in the North Carolina area - we clipped some of the snow so we could show the ice. I am told the map will not be updated. See also the NOAA map I posted by clicking on the map above.

I said yesterday that the weather might be "boring" today but in reality it's anything but that, at least here at AccuWeather.com, on our Facebook Page and the AccuWeather.com Forums. On the Forums, people are still discussing why meteorologists missed the forecast in the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas... and at the same time they are talking about snow possibilities there tomorrow and getting jitters over the next major winter storm which could affect the same area for the third time in a week.

There is some frustration being expressed by some Forums users and Facebook Fans in regards to the mid-Atlantic getting their second big snow storm of the season while some (but not all) to the north are high and dry. I'll be posting a blog tomorrow showing where the major cities stand as far as snowfall this season so we can see who the big winners and losers are.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is Groundhog Day and we're posting up a storm on our Facebook Page there today, please join us at right if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Every part of Western KY was over 4 inches for this last storm. No where was under that. Evansville, IN had 6-8 inches as well

Yes... I have lived in Williamsburg, VA all my life and I have always been VERY jealous how Richmond ALWAYS gets in the fun and Williamsburg gets rain too many times

I hope the next storm includes Williamsburg in the snow... Just slip that rain snow line a little farther to the east.... *Now is that too much to ask for???*

I live in Richmond, Va. and I would like to add to the last post. We had a surprise 'blizzard' in January of 2000. I had 16 inches of snow at my house in the western suburbs of Richmond. The day before the weather service called for a flurry or two and we woke up the next morning with about a foot of snow on the ground and it was still coming down. For this winter, I had 13 inches of snow from the Dec. 2009 storm and 13 inches from our storm this past weekend. We have been doing quite well this past year. I have lived in Richmond all my life (except a tour of duty in the military for 4 years) and I have seen a good number of big snowstorms in Richmond. And by big I mean 18 inches and more. I understand they are calling for a real big one this coming weekend too. Bring it on!!!

hey Jesse, Here in southern middle TN, (Lewis County-70 miles southwest of Nashville) we did get about a half inch of ice from sleet and freezing rain, but we also initially got 6 and a half inches of snow. It snowed really hard for about 4 or 5 hours first, then sleet, and ended as freezing rain. We don't get many systems like this here, so it has pretty much shut us down for a few days. thanks, Justin Reeves

What Jim said! When I moved in the summer of 2007 from the beautiful area of western PA - Sharon, PA, (sarcasm intended) the locals here in Ashland/Richmond,VA told me to LEAVE MY SNOWBLOWER IN PA! Hmph, could really used that snowblower!

My record keeping for Ashland, VA:

3/1/09 - 10inches of snow/ 2inches of sleet 12/18-19/09 - 12.5 inches 1/29-30/10 - 15.5 inches

Snow so far this winter....35" in Sykesville, MD 21784. Includes 7" from Saturday's storm. Thats more snow than we have seen the past 3 winters combined !

Posted by Ken | February 1, 2010 1:50 PM William Moore:

The area of central Oklahoma that you list as having had 1-3 inches of snow had 1/4-3/4 inch of ice on Thursday and then had 5-8 inches of snow on Friday. The NWS Norman site has a good graphic showing the ice and snow amounts recorded.

This winter has been awesome in Richmond, VA so far!!!! It's about time that we get the snow for a change. Until the March 1, 2009 snowstorm, the last big snow storm here was in January of 1996. These recent storms were the first big snow storms my two youngest have seen. Hopefully, we will continue with the snow the rest of winter. :-)
