Hurricane Vince's Buddy Ivan
Yesterday I talked about how rare the declaration of Tropical Storm Vince was, because it was so far out in the Atlantic. Artie over on the WeatherMatrix Current Weather Forum pointed out that Hurricane Ivan in 1980 was declared in a similar spot. So Vince is not unprecedented, but certainly rare. If you find other similar storms, let me know. Ivan actually looped around a couple times before finally moving off to the northeast. It became a hurricane because it initially moved southwestward into warmer waters. The waters in this area are normally not good for tropical storms.
Those in Portugal will recall the immense flooding that happened in November 1997. Vince is a shadow of his former self this morning on satellite, and it is unlikely he will cause similar trouble.
