Highs in 110s, Dew Points in 80s!

Extreme heat and humidity has overtaken the East and South U.S. this week. I know, it's early August, prime time for this stuff, but some of these readings are incredible! The highlights? Overnight temperatures and dew points at 84 degrees, highs near 110 and heat indexes over 120!

Here's the best of what I've seen so far yesterday and today. How impressive has it been? The Pittsburgh Post Gazette quotes Dave Houk, a senior forecaster here at AccuWeather, who says "The dew point was actually as high as I've ever seen it in Pittsburgh in nearly 20 years of forecasting." A total of 114 record high temperatures were tied or broken Wednesday.

NOTE: THIS LIST HAS BEEN SUPERCEDED BY A NEWER ONE. SOME INFO BELOW IS INCORRECT.

INTERESTING RECORDS:

HOTTEST DAY EVER: Greenville, South Carolina set an all-time high temperature record of 104 degrees, and an all-time maximum low temperature of 76.

130-YEAR RECORDS BROKEN: Augusta, Georgia broke their daily record high from 1878 on Tuesday, reaching 104. Wilmington, NC tied their Wednesday record from 1879 at 98 degrees.

TEMPERATURES REPORTED OVER 102:

111 @ Goldsboro GWW, NC: (Tue.)*
109 @ VUJ (Wed.)
106 @ Albany, GA (Tue.); FKN, HFF, SOP, AVC, CJR, EMV (Wed.)
105 @ MQY (Tue.); LBT, MEB, FO, MQY, DMH (Wed.)
104 @ Augusta, GA (Tue.); AFP, HRJ, CAE, MMT, WRB, AVK, EZF, LKU, RMN, Richmond, VA (Wed.)
103 @ Florence, SC (Tue.); EQY, FAY, IGX, RWI, RZZ, CUB, GRD, NYG, RIC (Wed.)

OFFICIAL RECORD HI TEMPS OVER 102:

Florence, SC: 106 (8/8)
Columbia, SC: 105 (8/8)
Greenville, SC: 104 (8/8)
Santuck, SC: 104 (8/8)
McColl, SC: 104 (8/8), 103 (8/7)
Johnston, SC: 104 (8/8)
Augusta, GA: 104 (8/7 & 8/8)
Florence, SC: 103 (8/7)
Montgomery, AL: 103 (8/8)
Fayetteville, NC: 103 (8/8)
Florence, SC: 103 (8/8)

OFFICIAL RECORD LOW TEMPS OVER 80:

Charleston, SC (Multiple Locations) 82-84 (TUE.-WED.)

HEAT INDEXES OVER 117:

121 at Chesapeake CPK, VA (Wed.)
121 at Franklin FKN, VA (Wed.)
121 at Brunswick BQK, GA (Tue. & Wed.)
119 at New River NCA, NC (Wed.)
118 at Charleston CHS, SC (Wed.)

There's no easy way for me to determine the maximum RealFeel temperatures this week (RealFeel (tm) is an index similar to Heat Index, but taking more into account) but from the stations above, I saw 129 at Brunswick and 121 at Chesapeake.

DEW POINTS IN THE 80s:

84: MQI, HXD
83: NCA
82: FFA, MRH, NKT, OCW, MYR
81: ASJ, CTZ, CRE, AYS, BQK, DBN, SVN, GLW, SNL, CPK, JKA
80: EWM, HSE, CHS, LFI

Yeah, I said in the 80s. This is rare in the United States. Dew points in the upper 70s numbered in the dozens Tuesday and Wednesday, and in fact we hit 75 for a dew point here in State College, PA:

Also, last night we were only down to 80 degrees at 10 pm here at AccuWeather HQ. I don't have my local records handy but that is probably in the top two or three high temperatures at that time of night in the last 10 years, if not the warmest.

Stations with 3-letter codes are METAR stations; others are COOP. If you know of other impressive readings, email me at community @ accuweather.com.
