Gordon Azores Update
UPDATE: Gordon is now bound (probably?) for Europe. For more information on the possibilities there, consult European Expert Alan Reppert (PREMIUM | PRO).
NOAA reports this morning at 5 AM that the Meteorological Service of the Azores has discontinued their Hurricane Warning as Gordon passes as a Category 1 Hurricane, the first such storm to hit the islands since 1992. Sustained winds were estimated by NOAA at 75 mph but "STRONGER WINDS...ESPECIALLY IN GUSTS...ARE LIKELY OVER ELEVATED TERRAIN."
Out of the official meteorological reporting stations in the Azores, Santa Maria gusted the highest with 71 knot winds (82 mph) winds were reported at 4 AM EDT before decreasing.
NHC is still claiming a Portugal hit, though the models show it hitting anywhere in western coastal Europe, or turning back out to sea.
We have two WeatherMatrix Members in the Azores, Jeff and Rui so I have emailed them to see if they have any eyewitness reports.
Bloomberg.com reported that...
Azoresnews.Net had an article on Gordon in Portugese, but it seemed to be mostly forecasting what would happen on the island. The PMI websiteadded "The most affected Islands should be Faial, S. Jorge, Terceira and S. Miguel."
