Get Ready For A 3-Day Severe Outbreak!
It's time to prepare for (another) three-day Severe Weather Outbreak that will spawn many tornadoes and a lot of wind and hail. Today, it will be the northern Plains and even southern Canada. It's important to recognize today, outside of the general risk area outlined by the SPC, that the Tornado Risk area will be further south, mainly in Nebraska, than the greatest Hail and Wind areas.
[The SPC has issued a Public Severe Weather Outlook] which says that supercell thunderstorms will develop in the western part of the risk area during the late afternoon when a dry line forms under unusually cold air aloft. The cells will merge into a squall line or, as they allude to in their Day 2 Outlook, an MCS [WikiPedia], that will pass to the east overnight.
Tomorrow, the risk area will move to the east with the MCS, but additional storms will develop tomorrow mid-afternoon as supercells and bow echoes in the western part of the risk area, and move eastward. The risk area will move eastward, expand southward but decrease on Friday, when areas from Vermont to Texas will be in a risk area, according to the SPC.
This storm could have a significant effect on populated areas in southern Canada as well. Canadian expert Brett Anderson (PREMIUM | PRO) will have the details on that. As we shift through the summer, we normally see thunderstorm and tornado risk shifting into the Northern Plains and Canada, and this is the first example of that this year.
