FEMA Melts $24M Worth of Ice
Seems like a strange thing to do in the summer, but FEMA destroyed $12 million worth of ice last week that they overbought during Hurricane Katrina.
The McCall says that a portion of the ice was melted in Foglesville, in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania on Friday, home to one of 22 nationwide facilities for AmeriCold, Inc, a refrigeration company.
After two years, the ice was deemed unfit for human consumption. You have to assume though that there were people who needed it and didn't get it after the storm. Understandably, now that it's old, it should be destroyed but with a record heat wave over most of the nation last week, it seems like they could have done something more fun with it...
Money numbers vary; a Tennessee congressman blamed FEMA for wasting "$70 million worth of ice" but McCall put the price tag of the unused portion of the ice at $24 million (not including transportation costs). The former article states that FEMA will not buy ice in bulk next time.
