Europe heat wave sets new all-time record highs in at least 6 countries!
Extreme heat in Europe this week has established new all-time high temperature records in five countries. From our news story:
-
United Kingdom (Cambridge): 101.7 F / 38.7 C
-
Germany (Lingen): 108.7 F / 42.6 C
-
Belgium (Begijnendijk): 107.2 F / 41.8 C
-
Luxembourg (Alzettetal): 105.4 F / 40.8 C
-
Netherlands (Gilzen-Rijen): 105.2 F / 40.7 C*
-
Scotland (Edinburgh): 88.8 F / 31.6 C

*Earlier record of 41.7 C was determined to be invalid.
Some of these records (definitely UK) need to be validated.
Most of these records came from tweets by the UK Met Office Friday morning.
Many of these records were broken by 3-4 degrees (F), which is very impressive. Paris (108.7 F / 42.6 C) and many other cities in France set their all-time city records, but the country fell short of their all time record which is 114 F. There were rumors of records set in Scandinavian countries, but I have not yet been able to confirm that.
I never thought I'd see the day when I saw 100 degrees on a map in England, or 108 in France, but it happened. This heat wave, after one last month and a long one last August, may even make residents in Europe reconsider air conditioning.

Here are selected records again in graphical format:
