East Coast Big Rain: The Sequel
UPDATE:Tropical Depression Number 16, which will later become the storm system that will bring the additional rain, has formed in the Caribbean. We have issued our official rainfall map, which has the heaviest rain east of what the NMM predicted below.
Whether or not this week's low pressure system is named, plenty of rain will fall to the west of its track over Cuba, Florida and the East Coast. Here's a model guess from the overnight run of the preferred short-term NMM model via our Pro site:
You read that right, a wide area of more than 6 inches of rain with more than 10 inches in some areas. The prediction from the GFS and ECMWF (which I can't show here due to contractual restrictions) have similar amounts in slightly different areas. These are only models; stay tuned later this morning for an official map from AccuWeather.com.
Unfortunately for some, this comes on the heels of flooding rains yesterday. Parts of eastern North and South Carolina got up to 10 inches of rain with that system, according to NOAA. Wilmington, NC received 10.33" of rain, their second-highest daily total ever (#1 was Hurricane Floyd)! As you can see from the map above, they are in the crosshairs of this next flooding situation!
Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Hurricane Gloria in 1985, which had a similar rainfall span, even though its track came from off of Africa.
