ORIGINAL POST: Information on the New England coast's first snowfall: snow totals is hard to come by this morning.
If you believe the radar*, it was snowing from South Carolina to Maine early this morning, and it still is east of Connecticut.
No snow reports from the coastal areas have been received from the NWS [JessePedia] so far. If you look at the NWS observations overnight and this morning map animation, despite what the radar said, only two stations outside of MA/CT/RI/NH/ME/NY** reported snow overnight. Wrightstown, NJ (PRO)) reported rain mixed with snow overnight. And for Long Island / extreme SE NY, we also had White Plains reports snow (PRO).
These webcams in Mass. and Rhode Island, the RI DOT cams, and these in Maine definitely show snow falling at 8:30 Eastern this morning, with some accumulation, though it looks like a dusting so far in most areas. New York City cams showed clear streets. [MORE CAMS]
That's mostly what our forecast is calling for -- a covering to an inch for most coastal areas.
*Due to the radar detecting virga (precipitation not reaching the ground), or due to the NWS' widely spaced hourly observation network.
**That's not counting parts of PA & NY which are getting lake-effect snow this morning, which is complicating the research.
The problem is really that the temperatures are just above freezing in many of the areas that are getting this snow.
