Severe thunderstorms stretch from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico this evening, as you can see from the 2-Hour Lightning Strike map at right.

At 6 p.m. Eastern, radars nationwide were detecting about 770 storms, with 87 Mesocyclones (indicating rotation) and Hail to 3.5" in diameter. 119 Tornado Warnings have been issued today and 25 tornadoes were reported by spotters.

AccuWeather.com RadarPlus detected about 50,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in a 2-hour period on one radar scope alone (Paducah, KY). Click here to see an example of the track of one of the storms with the most lightning strikes.
