Christmas Day is only a few days away and is a widely observed holiday around the world. Plenty of Christmas Day outlooks for the United States from various sources are available, but what can others outside the U.S. expect Christmas morning. This blog will take a brief look at the weather for Christmas morning for each continent.
We will start the global trek in the Southern Hemisphere by looking at South America. Looking at the latest computer modeling we can see very few problem areas across the continent. Rain and thunderstorms are expected around Rio De Janeiro and central Brazil, as well as parts of Colombia, Peru, Bolivia into the foothills of the Andes in northwest Argentina.
Some specific city forecasts…
Buenos Aires, Argentina Mostly sunny High 29 C (85 F)
Montevideo, Uruguay Mostly sunny High 29 C (85 F)
Santiago, Chile Sunny and hot High 33 C (92 F)
Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Chance of rain High 26 C (78 F)

Heading eastward from South America to Africa. A cold front is expected to produce rain and thunderstorms from Mozambique to Angola into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Much of the rest of Africa will have dry weather for Christmas morning. However, the main area of concern will be watching potential Tropical Storm Chalane northeast of Madagascar and north of the Mascarene Islands.
Some specific city forecasts….
Cape Town, South Africa Mostly sunny High 26 C (78 F)
Johannesburg, South Africa Chance of morning rain High 27 C (80 F)
Lagos, Nigeria Partly sunny; chance of a shower High 32 C (90 F)
Cairo, Egypt Mostly sunny High 20 C (68 F)

Staying in the Southern Hemisphere with some of the earliest areas to be visited by Santa Claus we are looking at Australia and New Zealand. Much of southern Australia, including Perth, Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney should wake up to dry weather on Christmas morning, while a monsoon trough leads to scattered rain and thunderstorms from Darwin to Brisbane. Scattered showers are also possible over the western portions of New Zealand’s northern island, with a better chance for showers over the southern island.
Some specific city forecasts….
Sydney, NSW, Australia Chance of showers High 25 C (77 F)
Perth, WA, Australia Sunny High 32 C (90 F)
Melbourne, VIC, Australia Partly sunny High 21 C (70 F)
Auckland, New Zealand Mostly cloudy High 21 C (70 F)

Heading north to southern Asia, much of India and nearby areas will be dry. Much of the Middle East will also be dry, except for a storm system that will bring some rain and mountain snow to northern and western Iran.

Looking at Europe, high pressure will foster dry weather across much of the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and the Iberian Peninsula. Snow can fall over the Alps as well as parts of Germany into Poland, the Baltic states, Belarus and northwest Russia. A wintry mix of snow, ice and rain is possible across Ukraine into Romania. Greece and southern Italy should be dry, but a couple of showers are possible in central and northern Italy, including Rome and Vatican City.
Some specific city forecasts….
London, England, UK Mostly sunny High 5 C (41 F)
Paris, France Clouds and sun High 6 C (43 F)
Berlin, Germany Mostly cloudy High 3 C (37 F)
Madrid, Spain Partly sunny High 11 C (52 F)
Rome, Italy Couple of showers High 16 C (60 F)

Though Christmas is not widely observed as a national holiday across much of Asia we will still take a quick look at the weather across the continent for the morning of the 25th. The main story will be sea-effect snow continuing across northwest and west-central Honshu and western Hokkaido in Japan. Much of eastern China will be dry, while showers are possible across Taiwan and the Philippines. The heaviest rain in the Philippines will be in the south as a tropical disturbance approaches.

Lastly, a look at the latest snow-cover map from the Rutgers Global Snow Lab shows that outside of the Alps, parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia to much of Europe will likely not have a white Christmas. Siberia and some of the higher terrain in Eastern Asia can have snow on the ground for the 25th, but most major cities outside of the mountains should remain snowless.
