The Deadliest Catch/Opinion Poll
The weather in much of the West remains quiet with no big changes likely the next few days. If you want to catch a peek at a late-week storm in the Northwest check out the blog by Paul Yeager.
Because of the blandness of the weather in the West, today I diverge from talking about pure weather-related topics, though there is weather involved.
I do not watch a ton of TV, though I have some favorite shows. I like the CSI series and rarely miss one of those three. One of the reasons I like the CSI series is that I am involved in the forensic science business as well, in forensic meteorology. Oh, and I LOVE Vegas.
But one of my favorite shows over the last 3 seasons does not appear on the traditional networks. It is not on one of the many pay channels either. It is on The Discovery Channel and is called The Deadliest Catch. If you haven't seen or heard of this show it follows the trials and tribulations of 21st Century cowboys risking life and limb on the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. These fisherman are after the riches of catching crab, large King Crab in November, and Snow Crab in January, in one of the most dangerous places to fish in the world.
I am enthralled by this show on many levels. The weather these fisherman have to catch crab in is certainly one reason I like this show. Seas that can grow to heights of 50 feet or more, winds blowing constantly at hurricane force and temperatures plummeting in January to well below zero. Another level on which this show holds my attention is the risks these people take day in and day out to bring in one of the world's most prized catches. A third level is the camaraderie that these people have with one another. It IS, perhaps a look back to what it was like for the old time cowboys on the Plains of the West back in the 1800s.
This show is one of the Discovery Channel's most popular shows, perhaps THE most popular. Now, my wife does not like to fish. She HATES to be on a boat in high seas (she can get seasick standing in the surf near a beach). And she doesn't usually like reality shows either. But now she is hooked as well.
Do you watch the show? If so, what draws you to it? Send me an email to the link on my page here and let me know. If you don't watch The Deadliest Catch, give it a try once and let me know what you think. I am curious about what draws other people to this very popular show. I will share some of your thoughts in a future blog posting.
