Northeast could have real taste of spring later next week

1. These maps show the change in the pressure pattern between early yesterday and early today. Today, the recent storm is getting ready to leave as a cold high pressure area takes over.

2. The satellite picture suggests dry air will be in charge in the East as we head into the weekend. A patch of snow may run through the Ohio Valley tomorrow night and reach parts of Virginia on Saturday. The disturbance involved is not yet well-defined.

3. Next week, the storm now drenching/flooding California will be moving east, forcing a ridge from the Plains eastward. This will certainly allow much warmer air to reach as far east as the west side of the Appalachians early in the week. A stubborn storm off the East coast and a chilly high pressure area moving south through New England will probably delay much warming in most of the Northeast. However, once the high moves south past the Carolinas, there may be enough time before the next cold front arrives to allow a warmer period all the way to the Northeast Corridor. This spaghetti plot shows the predicted flow from each member of the GFS ensembles next Monday. There is good agreement among the members.
