Through midday Monday, snow spreading across downtown Chicago will total 3-6 inches. Sharp variations in snowfall totals can occur from northern and western suburbs to southern suburbs, with highest amounts to the south and southeast of the city. Heavy and persistent bands of lake-effect snow can rapidly reduce visibility and result in slow travel, particularly during the Monday morning commute. In the heaviest bands, the potential remains for snowfall rates to exceed 2 inches per hour at times. If more persistent lake-effect bands shift farther west, higher accumulations can occur in the Chicago metro area.
