Mysterious metallic spheres found on Australian beach identified as space debris
The Australian Space Agency says the objects likely came from a foreign rocket body that recently re-entered Earth's atmosphere.

Metallic spheres that mysteriously washed onto an Australian beach over the weekend have now been identified as pieces of a rocket that fell back to Earth.
The objects were found on Forrest Beach in North Queensland, and determined to be "pressure vessels from a space launch vehicle," the Australian Space Agency said in a Facebook post.
The metal spheres were about twice the size of a basketball, the New York Times reported.
“The objects’ location and characteristics are consistent with debris from a foreign rocket body that recently re-entered the atmosphere from orbit,” the Australian Space Agency said. “The Agency is continuing to engage with international authorities to formally confirm the launch vehicle and launching state.”

Queensland emergency responders have determined the debris is safe, but advised residents not to touch it.
The Queensland Fire Department reported Sunday that a 50-meter “exclusion zone” remains in place while scientific teams monitor the area. It is possible that more space debris could be found in the coming days.
According to NASA, space debris is any human-made object, such as a piece of spacecraft, that orbits the Earth and no longer has a functioning purpose. The Australian Space Agency noted that while most debris lands in a specific place on Earth, other objects’ falls may be more difficult to predict.
This is particularly true for objects that fall into the ocean, where currents could carry them far away from where they land, especially if they float.
Alice Gorman, an associate professor at Flinders University and space junk expert, told UPI the “space balls” likely landed in the ocean before washing ashore. It’s possible the objects did not contain fuel, making them buoyant enough to be washed ashore by the waves.
The Australian Space Agency said anyone who finds similar debris on a beach should contact both the local authorities and the agency to ensure it is handled appropriately.
