Storms to bring hail, damaging winds from Rockies to Plains into this week
Flooding downpours, damaging wind gusts and hail will target parts of the Rockies and Plains into this week as a potent dip in the jet stream moves east.
Severe thunderstorms drenched much of the Northeast on Aug. 20, but parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York were hit especially hard.
An active weather setup across the United States will fuel severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours across portions of the Rockies, Plains and Northeast through Tuesday. This comes just days after a large complex of storms produced tornadoes from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.
Severe thunderstorms to target portions of the Rockies, Plains
Following Saturday's severe weather, additional rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are anticipated across northern portions of the Rockies and Great Plains through Sunday evening. Hail and localized damaging wind gusts will be the main hazards with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 80 miles per hour.
Farther east, the severe weather threat is not expected to be as widespread as on Saturday in this region, though stronger thunderstorms could still produce heavy downpours, gusty winds and small hail. A few lake-effect rain showers could also develop near the Great Lakes.
Cooler and less humid air will spread south behind the storm system Sunday evening. Drier weather will follow across much of the region for the start of the workweek.
Severe thunderstorms to once again target Great Plains Monday
Additional rounds of thunderstorms are expected across northern portions of the Great Plains on Monday. Localized damaging wind gusts and hail will be the main hazards. Downpours and strong winds could lead to travel disruptions during the Monday evening commute.
Severe threat continues Tuesday
Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and evening across portions of the Great Plains from central Nebraska into portions of Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. Flash flooding, hail and localized damaging wind gusts will be the main hazards. Heavy downpours can lead to travel disruptions, especially along the Interstate 70 corridor.
