Severe thunderstorms to bring damaging winds, flooding from Midwest to Northeast this week

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and flooding rainfall will track along the edge of a heat dome into early September.

Thunderstorms temporarily stopped all air traffic in Houston as storms caused delays across various parts of the U.S. on Aug. 28.

Rounds of severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds and flooding downpours are expected across parts of the United States this week as intense heat builds across the eastern half of the country.

Thunderstorms are expected to track from the Plains to the Northeast at least into the middle of this week along the northern periphery of a heat dome, AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said.

During the first half of this week, rounds of thunderstorms will continue to track along the northern edge of a heat dome centered across the Southeast. This setup could cause storms to repeatedly track across some of the same areas for several days. Damaging wind gusts and flash flooding are expected to be the main hazards.

While a brief lull in severe weather is expected Monday, strong-to-severe thunderstorms are forecast across a large portion of the Plains and Midwest on Tuesday, with areas from northern Nebraska to central Michigan at risk of severe weather.

As complexes of thunderstorms round the northern edge of the heat dome, strong-to-severe storms are also expected Tuesday across parts of the Northeast from Buffalo, New York, to the Atlantic Coast.

Additional rounds of severe weather are expected by midweek, including across parts of Pennsylvania and New York. A moderate risk for severe weather has been issued on Wednesday for portions of northeastern Pennsylvania into eastern New York.

Damaging wind gusts are expected to be the primary concern in any severe thunderstorm. Localized damaging wind gusts of 60-70 mph are forecast, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 80 mph.

While damaging winds will be the primary concern, flash flooding is another concern where thunderstorms produce intense downpours and repeat over the same areas.

The severe weather threat will shift to the south and east on Thursday into the mid-Atlantic, including places like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Damaging winds and flash flooding are once again possible in any severe thunderstorm, though storm coverage is expected to be less widespread.

The corridor of strong-to-severe thunderstorms will shift even farther south on Friday, with gusty winds and heavy downpours possible from Virginia to Delaware.
