Tropical Rainstorm Nuri to bring locally heavy rain to inland areas of southern China

By Maura Kelly, AccuWeather meteorologist & Robert Richards, AccuWeather meteorologist

A thunderstorm dropped more than an inch of rain in Ajaccio, Corsica, which flooded the streets of this French island in the Mediterranean Sea on June 11.

Nuri has become a tropical rainstorm and will bring locally heavy rainfall to inland areas of southern China through Monday.

Nuri officially made landfall Sunday morning local time along the coast of Yangjiang, Guangdong, in southern China. As it did so, heavy rain and gusty winds slammed into coastal areas.

Nuri will continue to rain itself out as it tracks inland into Monday.

"Rainfall amounts of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) can be expected along the southern China coast," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards.

This amount of rain can lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

This system first developed into a tropical depression during the middle of the week and was given the name Butchoy by the Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) before making landfall.

According to PAGASA, as of late Thursday afternoon local time, the storm had already made two landfalls in the Philippines. The first landfall occurred at 5:30 p.m., local time, over Polillo, located in the province of Quezon, and the second occurred just 30 minutes later over Infanta, Quezon. The third and final landfall took place nearly two and a half days later near Yangjiang, Guangdong, in southern China.

Significant strengthening was hindered on Friday as the storm tracked across the mountainous terrain of the northern Philippines. Despite this, Nuri still threatened flooding rainfall across parts of the region.

Rainfall totals of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) were common across Luzon to end the week. Manila reported the highest total with 141 mm (5.56 inches) of rainfall.

The last tropical cyclone to develop in the West Pacific basin was Typhoon Vongfong, also known as Ambo in the Philippines. The typhoon forced 50,000 people from their homes after causing devastating flooding and widespread power outages across the northern Philippines during the middle of May.

Residents wade along a flooded village street caused by Typhoon Vongfong as it passed by Sorsogon province, eastern Philippines on Friday, May 15, 2020. More than 150,000 people were riding out a weakening typhoon in emergency shelters in the Philippines on Friday after a mass evacuation that was complicated and slowed by the coronavirus.
