The Most Accurate Forecast of Destructive Winds:
AccuWeather Storm Warning meteorologists were the only source to most accurately warn that the thunderstorm's winds would gust to 90 mph.
• The NWS and other known sources issued a warning for only 80-mph winds, which may have resulted in some people and businesses being unprepared for the impact of the windstorm. AccuWeather Storm Warning meteorologists warned of 90-mph wind gusts before the NWS and other known sources even issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Omaha area for 70-mph winds!
The Best and Most Accurate Forecast for the Duration of Destructive Winds:
The destructive thunderstorm winds not only occurred as the thunderstorms commenced but also continued through the very end of the thunderstorms moving out of the area.
• AccuWeather Storm Warning meteorologists exclusively provided the best and most accurate forecast for the duration of the destructive winds.
• The NWS and other known sources allowed the Severe Thunderstorm Warning to expire at 6:15 p.m. CT. However, destructive winds of 81 mph continued to be reported in parts of Omaha at 6:15 p.m. CT, and damaging winds of 65 mph continued to be reported at 6:26 p.m. CT at the Omaha airport, 11 minutes after the NWS and other known sources allowed the Severe Thunderstorm Warning to expire, incorrectly indicating that according to the NWS, the threat of damaging winds was over.
• People and businesses not relying on AccuWeather’s warnings, but rather those from the NWS and other known sources may have easily been caught off guard by resuming operations or activities that may have been unsafe in such damaging winds.
