The complexity of ice

Snow depth analysis extends well beyond measuring how much snow fell during a storm. Forensic meteorologists examine snowfall rates, accumulation, compaction, melting, runoff, evaporation, and subsequent weather conditions to determine how snow cover changed over time.

Another winter premises liability case in New Jersey required investigators to determine whether slush had frozen into solid ice before a reported fall. By examining snowfall timing, rainfall, temperatures, and the transition from snow to rain, AccuWeather determined that above-freezing temperatures prevented slush from freezing into solid ice before the incident.
